- Students will spend around 30 minutes every day reading independently. Our goal is for each student to read a minimum of 30 books encompassing at least five different genres by the end of the year.
- Each student has been given a reading log, which is glued inside the back cover of their reading notebook. These logs will be checked and used as a tool during regularly held student-teacher conferences. Students are expected to log all of their reading, as it is how we will keep track of their progress and proximity to reaching the 30 book goal.
- The majority of texts students read during reading workshop will be self-selected, so we have discussed in depth the importance of choosing "just right books"-- books that are an appropriate reading level for each individual student. Students have a handout glued in their notebook to refer to and use as a guideline for selecting books.
Next week, students will begin working regularly with reading partners, learn more about themselves as readers, and will discover how to monitor their thinking while reading.
